Os mecanismos com os quais a semântica da sentença é composta tem sido tema de diversos estudos nos últimos anos. No que se refere à Coerção Aspectual, a literatura aponta para as hipóteses de Coerção Iterativa identificando efeitos comportamentais e neurofisiológicos em sentenças em que o objeto singular é incompatível com o modificador temporal durativo (TODOROVA et al., 2000a). Teorias recentes da Interface Sintaxe-Semântica olham para as propriedades aspectuais como o resultado do merge entre o verbo e seu argumento interno (SAMPAIO; FRANÇA, 2010a). Este trabalho propõe uma hipótese de comportamento das propriedades aspectuais a cada ciclo da computação sintática. Esta proposta tem como objetivo dar conta dos principais experimentos que apontam a Coerção Iterativa e também a sua ausência como em Pickering et al. (2008).

In the last decades, Theoretical and Experimental Linguistics have observed a significant effect at the reading times of sentences combining punctual verbs and durative contexts (eg. The child sneezed for some minutes). These effects can be found through self-paced reading experiments (TODOROVA et al. 2000), Eye-tracking tests (PICKERING et al. 2006) and also through EEG (PACZYNSKI & KUPERBERG, 2014). Since punctuality and durativity are two sets of a linguistic property called Aspect, the phenomenon has been referred to as Aspectual Coercion. In this sense, the durative context forces an iterative reading of punctual events.
An alternative hypothesis looks at the effect as a Time Perception phenomenon (SAMPAIO, FRANÇA & MAIA, 2014). Assuming the Internal Clock Model (TREISMANN, 1984; MECK, 1996), I propose that the subjective length of events are acquired and shaped through time, providing us with a mean duration of events one has already experienced. Thus, events read in a temporal context above or bellow its mean, will also be affected by coercion (eg. John had lunch for some hours; John worked for some seconds).
In order to test my hypothesis, I ran three self-paced reading experiments to verify the reading times of durative sentences in different temporal contexts. The first test failed to identify coercion effects in ciclical contexts, such as days, months and years. For our second and third experiments, in French and Brazilian Portuguese respectively, we first ran a categorization pre-test aiming at controlling the mean duration of each event. Then, the ‘minute’-verbs where chosen to compose the experimental sentences. These verbs where combined to different temporal contexts such as seconds, minutes, hours and days. Both tests present higher reading times at the end of the verbal phrase for the experimental conditions compared to minutes condition.
The results presented in this thesis indicate that the knowledge of event duration is relevant for the online sentence processing, and is one of the mechanisms involved in Aspectual Coercion. Further, this research paves the way for collaborative projects between Linguistics and other areas of knowledge, such as Psychophysics and Time Perception.

Research on time perception born aiming at understanding the mechanisms underlying chronobiology, the estimation of subjective time and the temporal coordination of some motor responses. The progress made by the discipline raised an information processing model that explains the cognitive mechanisms involved in the psychological time. Linguistic research also deals with some time-related phenomena, such as aspectual coercion. Coercion occurs when a punctual verb is inserted into durative contexts, forcing an iterative reading of the event [the child sneezed all the day long]. Only recently the concepts of subjective time reached the research on language and expanded the predictions of some linguistic phenomena. The present paper consists of a brief review of the main concepts on time perception, aiming at stablishing a relation between the psychology of time and the psycholinguistics of aspectual coercion.

O roteiro do filme gira em torno do trabalho de uma linguista, Louise Banks, convocada pelo exército americano para decifrar ‘a linguagem’ dos visitantes alienígenas. Se você é entusiasta no tema, mesmo que não seja linguista ou não tenha gostado do filme, sugiro fortemente a leitura do conto. Ele é muito mais pé no chão, realizando a ligação entre a Física alienígena e sua língua (não, o Físico da história não é um “vice protagonista decorativo”), dando evidências para cada descoberta das dezenas de equipes de linguistas e de físicos ao redor do mundo.

Abstract: In the last few years, several softwares have been designed to help the development of experiments in cognitive sciences. The offer of user friendly software would help beginners in their first tests. However, it brought new problems and questions. Which software should one use? Which one is more adequate for my research and why? The present paper brings a quick and panoramic review on computer science, programming languages and on the presentation of visual stimuli. Through these three topics, I intend to promote a discussion (i) on the main types of software

Several experiments in Psycholinguistics found evidences of Iterative Coercion, an effect related to the reanalysis of punctual events used in durative contexts triggering an iterative meaning. We argue that this effect is not related to aspectual features, and that event-duration semantics is accessed during Sentence Processing. We ran a self-paced reading experiment in Brazilian Portuguese whose sentences contain events with an average duration of a few minutes. These sentences were inserted in durative contexts that became the experiment’s conditions following a Latin Square design: control condition (minutes), subtractive (seconds), iterative (hours) and habitual (days). Higher RTs were measured at the critical segments of all experimental conditions, except for the habitual context. The results corroborated our hypothesis while defying the psychological reality of habitual coercion. To better observe the habitual coercion condition, we now present a reanalysis of Sampaio et al. (2014) data. The present analysis confirms the results of our tests.

In recent years, several software have been designed to aid in the development of experiments in cognitive sciences. The offer of user-friendly software should help beginners in their initial studies; however, it has brought new problems and questions. Which software should one use? Which one is more appropriate for my research and why? The present paper brings a quick and panoramic review of computer science, programming languages, and the presentation of visual stimuli. Through these three topics, I intend to promote a discussion (i) on the main types of software for stimulation in cognitive sciences, (ii) on the importance of being attentive to the hardware specifications, and (iii) on some compatibility issues between software-hardware methods as independent variables in our experiments.

O que é a linguística? Podemos dizer que esta é a ciência da linguagem, que possui o seu núcleo na pesquisa da estrutura fonológica, sintática e semântica da comunicação humana (linguagem), mas que também realiza suas interfaces com diferentes disciplinas como, por exemplo, a sociologia (sociolinguística), a história (linguística histórica), o direito (linguística forense), a psicologia (psicolinguística), a biologia (biolinguística), a neurociência (neurolinguística) e a computação (linguística computacional). Cada uma dessas subáreas tem seu próprio programa de desenvolvimento tecnológico e científico. Por outro lado, a resposta a essas perguntas são diversas a depender de quem são as pessoas questionadas. Através de um relato de experiência, busco revisar as principais reações do público que desconhece a área e as medidas tomadas por linguistas para aproximar sua área desse público. Desse modo, o presente artigo tem o objetivo de estabelecer um rápido mapa das principais ações realizadas por linguistas e não linguistas na divulgação científica brasileira. Para isso, uso como base a definição de divulgação científica de Soares (2013) com ligeiras modificações para listar as principais ações de divulgação da linguística brasileira nos últimos dois anos, dentre eles, participações em festivais de divulgação, criação de revistas voltadas para o público não linguista, criação de conteúdo para blogs, podcasts e youtube.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo compreender melhor o funcionamento do sistema de pontuação do português, do século XVI ao XIX, focalizando o emprego de vírgula antes de orações completivas verbais. a escolha desse contexto de uso da vírgula não foi fortuita e se deu pela variação no uso do sinal observada em textos literários escritos e publicados na época, e pela dificuldade dos gramáticos, até o início do século XVIII, em definir a distinção entre as orações completivas e relativas e, portanto, o uso da vírgula nesses tipos de construções também. Para tanto, foi selecionado um corpus composto por 14 textos de autores portugueses nascidos no mesmo período, do século XVI ao XIX. E, após a análise dos dados, observou-se que a maioria das orações tinha como regente um verbo do tipo dicendi, ou de pensamento, típicos de discurso relatado. isso levou à hipótese de que a vírgula possuía uma função a mais, de introduzir discurso relatado-além das já descritas pelos gramáticos-, corroborada pelo fato de, nos mesmos textos, haver ocorrências com dois pontos, já descritos como tendo a função primeira de introduzir citações, precedidos pelos mesmos verbos. além de introduzir relato, o uso de vírgula nos textos quinhentistas, embora à primeira vista pareça aleatório, poderia ser motivado pela presença ou não de um elemento interpolado, como um sujeito ou uma oração, seguindo o verbo. ademais, notou-se que, a partir do século XVIII, há uma queda progressiva na porcentagem de ocorrências com orações completivas precedidas por vírgula, quando tal uso não-convencional da vírgula teria caído em desuso. ou seja, apesar do que as gramáticas da época mostram e alguns estudos, como o de Rocha (1997), afirmam, o modo de empregar a vírgula teria sofrido modificações desde a primeira metade do século XVIII.
