About

Rafael D'Almeida Martins is the co-coordinator of the Earth System Governance Research Fellows Network as part of the long-term international research effort 'Earth System Governance Project', a core project of the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP). He is also a PhD candidate in Environment and Society at the Centre for Environmental Studies (Nepam), University of Campinas (Unicamp) in Brazil where he collaborates with the project ‘Urban growth, vulnerability and adaptation: social and ecological dimensions of climate change on the coast of São Paulo’ funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) through its Programme on Global Climate Change. 

During 2008-2009 he was a visiting research fellow at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands under supervision of Prof Dr Frank Biermann funded by the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES). As first degree, he holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration, with a minor in international management, from the Business School of Sao Paulo, Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV/EAESP).

Prior to his doctoral studies, Rafael Martins had been working with development organisations in Brazil, Latin America and worldwide. He served as the programme officer of LogoLink - The Learning Initiative to Strengthen Citizen Participation on Local Governance, a global learning network of practitioners from civil society organisations and research institutions working in South, Central and North Americas, Southeast Asia, East and Southern Africa, South Asia and China led by the Polis Institute, Brazil and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex, UK with support from the Ford Foundation and other donors. Also, he was the executive director of the Centre for Studies and Research in Social Policies and Quality of Life, a non-government organisation working with socio-environmental issues in the São Paulo metropolitan area.

Rafael Martins' research addresses the challenges posed by climate change and variability in urban areas and coastal zones, particularly in terms of vulnerability, adaptive capacity and local governance.
